In Psi-Ops on the PS2 I got stuck on a ladder every time I tried using it and there was no other way to proceed.

Does that bug where Fallout NV PS3 starts to dip into single digit framerates when the save file got too big count? It was like trying to play a slide show. I had just started the DLC where you went to the national park too :(

In Lego The Lord of the Rings, there's a part where you have to take down a few oliphaunts and, after I defeated the first ones, the rest of them just never spawned so I couldn't complete the level or the game.

Not a hard lock per se, but playing the PS2 Classics version of Persona 3 FES, all the walls in the final block of Tartarus were going nuts with flashing making it very straining on the eyes to look at, and I can't even imagine what it would cause for photosensitive people. This was an emulation issue, and eventually I found out that if you delete the game and redownload it, they had an updated version that fixed it.

i softlocked kirby's epic yarn at the demo station at e3 2010. it surprised the guy at the kiosk who then asked me how i did that (it had to do with two player and lifting and tossing stuff in a certain order where you can get trapped underneath something). i did it again once i had the full game.

I trudged through the Civil War questline in Skyrim, doing fortress assault after another. Finally get to the end and... the "boss" is invulnerable so I can't complete the questline.

I had this happen in half-life 2 on Xbox. I was in that creepy village and I had to move something with a crane. A car I think? But it didn't work. The car flew all over the place and I couldn't walk past it. Reloaded many times but it didn't fix it. So that's where my playthrough ended.

In Torchlight 2 on PS4 I played through 60% of the game with a friend on coop until my character got glitched and we couldn't play together anymore. I could play solo but every time we tried to join a lobby together the game would immediately break, no matter who's hosting. It made us quit the game altogether because I didn't want to start a new character at that stage. The PS4 version was very broken in general so that didn't surprise me.

They did fix it a few months later so we did end up returning to the game and obtaining the platinum together.

Not game breaking but in Infamous: Second Son and Spiderman (PS4) I managed to get myself caught in geometry with no way to get out. In Infamous I clipped into some vehicle or bus, while in Spiderman half of me got stuck in some building. A checkpoint restart fixed the issue easy enough.

I want to say I experienced the Twilight Princess canon room glitch. At one point in the game you have to find and magically transport a canon to proceed with the story. When you first discover the canon there's someone in the room but you need to ask them to leave before the game will let you proceed. If you save in this room and load it back up you'll find that the NPC is gone but you still get the message saying you can't teleport the canon because someone is watching. Try to leave the room and the NPC magically shows up to stop you and then disappears again. If you wanted to keep playing your options were to delete the save file and start over, or you could send in your game to Nintendo who would send you back a patched version of the game that let you proceed.

Here's a 16 year old video of it.

this can be bypassed by using another glitch.
if you go into the map and open the portals inside it while standing near the cannon, you can teleport the cannon even if the guy is still there normally. this is a glitch since you're supposed to make him go away but funnily it allows you to bypass him in the previously mentioned scenario where he's gone but the message still stops you from moving the cannon.

Fable 2 has a weird interactive cutscene mode to live up with molyneux's promise of no non-interactive cutscene where you can still move around and use social commands but your actual ability to interact with anything is briefly locked until the scene finishes. There is a glitch where this occasionally gets stuck and you have to either move to another area or reload. Given the game's auto save being pretty aggressive, you rarely lose too much time.

...but it all can really fuck you towards the end of the game, where there's an autosave trigger that happens right after a cutscene transition happens into a tunnel escape sequence. If that glitch hits you there, you are basically going to have to start over if you dont have a backup save, since the autosave prevents a reload and the escape sequence is set in a way that you can't change areas to get your controls back.

Operancia: The Stolen Sun on PS4.

One of the intractable objects to proceed to open a door was just suddenly un-interactable, so I couldn't finish the second map. I think it might have to do with when I saved/quit during that sequence of events, but I have zero will to try again.

Same thing happen to me in VR mode like 3/4 into the game, i had to switch non vr mode to make it work, when i go back in VR it was still broken. Never finish it because of that.

I even contact them about it, except the respond we will look into this.... nothing happen, no patch, sadly it was a good game.

I find using the Xs makes it too easy and only mark what's necessary to complete the puzzle. It's much more mentally stimulating. Especially in games where you get penalized for marking the wrong spots, but games that penalize you like that let you off easy since it's impossible to make a mistake that you have to find and fix yourself.

I've been relatively lucky with most games, usually able to recover an old save or something. I feel like if a game has ever corrupted on me, it's not memorable enough.

Back on my old Pokemon Red cart after I'd beaten I caught a Misingno just to see what would happen, didn't softlock but none of my Pokémon would ever have full health bars and a bunch of other weird menu stuff kept happening. Never tried resetting the save file to see if that would persist.

Assassin's Creed 2? Collected all the feathers and immediately tried to change outfit. The game got stuck in a loop, or was just broken and had to restart entire game.

Darksiders 2, some dungeon with bridges. One of the bridges is switch didn't work and could not progress. Had to restart entire game.

First bioshock. Can't remember where it was but I was in a room and had to open the door to get out. The button prompt would never appear so I was stuck in that room. Tried everything…reloading save, using an older save and replaying the area, reinstalling the game. I watched some YouTube videos to see if I was being stupid and missing something but nope there definitely should've been a button coming up to open the door. So I had no option but to quit and uninstall the game.

this was the original version on steam. I think I got the remasters for free but couldn't be bothered playing and not knowing if the bug was fixed or still there.

Is this a troll thread? Bolding INCOMPETENCE and it being about a player mistake and not an actual bug makes me think this is a ruse.

Anyways I thought I was going to lose a whole day of real good progress in Stardew Valley because my cat was blocking me entering my house at 12am. I somehow shimmied him (PISSER) to the left by bumping into him but it was sort of ridiculous and stressful but also very much like my real cat.

Just cause 3 on pc. I died as the game auto saved and it tried to reload at the same time and corrupted my saves.
If its more doh I'm an idiot progress blocking then jedi fallen order and the electric water room is my shame. You literally have to turn off the power walk across the water and cut the big obvious power conduits. i spent about an hour trying everything and even had to look up a guide in the end.

The game breaking save spot in Twilight Princess was interesting. The Wii did not support patches for games. There was no way to fix games that were already sold. Anyone playing a bugged version who would try to save in that unfortunate spot and later tried to resume from there would end up completely stuck.
So Nintendo had to design a separate downloadable application. When launched it would detect and fix the broken save file.

In Guardians of the Galaxy I had two instances where the game wouldn't progress. One during a part early on in the game, my team just wasn't following me, it allowed me to progress to the next area but it wouldn't let me complete the tasks required to proceed further than that. Then same thing happened on the final boss, stuff basically just stopped happening, the boss battle wouldn't progress and everyone was just standing there, it wasn't the kind of boss where you could just walk up and attack them either.
Thankfully in both instances simply reloading my last checkpoint fixed it.

Another one I had, and this wasn't a glitch, but I soft locked Oblivion once. I had vampirism, and was doing a main quest where you had to go into a dungeon or something like that, I wasn't really prepared but I was narrowly able to escape with little health, but once out of the cave it was daylight and I couldn't really make it far without dying. My last save was in the cave and I couldn't wait until night because of enemies being nearby. Ended up starting a new game.

Perhaps not a glitch, but a massive oversight in Tomb Raider Underworld. There's a section of the game where you're in this massive room and you're supposed to climb down. There's a ledge that when you hang on it it breaks and then you're supposed to go from there. When I played and saw the ledge was breaking I instantly jumped back up to where I came from on instinct. I then looked around the rest of the room. The game autosaved. With that ledge now broken and having jumped back up, it's now impossible to progress. You need to go from that ledge that no longer exists. The game has autosaved and there's nothing you can do about it. I ended up having to load up an earlier save and do a big chunk of the game again.

the downloadable fix was actually for another game-breaking bug in Skyward Sword

My save in the Riftbreaker got corrupted because I let the fungal creep grow to the point where the game hangs if I try to cut through it. Kind of a glaring oversight when creep can kill a save.

A glitch that can be remedied by restarting the game in both cases, but both glitches are very unclear as to being glitches which was very frustrating for sure.

The first was the treasure chase stage in Rayman origins first water world, right at the end a flaming ship mast collapses and on a rare occasion the game seems to have an issue with the timing and scrolling that means you just can't pass this last obstacle without dying. The instant retry doesn't change this so I beat my head against this wall and it actively soured my initial thoughts on origins.

The second was a puzzle in the snow area of ori and the will of the wisps, it required using bash to redirect a flame expelled by a cauldron to an icy wall, except there's a chance the flame's initial trajectory just causes it to fling into a nearby wall, any attempts to try and work around this with the bash skills of a lifetime just doesn't work.
Interestingly this happened on my replay of the game, so for 30 painful minutes I'm ranting "there's no way this section was this hard the first time I did it!"
Once again, you need a complete reboot of the game for that magic fix.

More recently I could've hit a side quest dead end in the very glitchy sable, due to pistons passing through the player in one ship interior that prevented a puzzle from working. fortunately some YouTuber with the same glitch found a way to circumvent the problem with the corner of the piston allowing you to at least launch yourself at a wacky physics breaking angle so you could AGDQ your way to the finish of the puzzle room instead.

I suppose all of these were games I did beat so it's not game ending, but if I didn't thoroughly enjoy all 3 in general it could've caused me to just abandon them.

PS: still salty about not being able to 100% space station silicon valley, damn bear mountain souvenir, kid me just didn't understand

There's a glitch in Street Fighter V where, if I play online, I lose 100% of the time. I'm not sure why it affects my copy because I've seen videos of people playing online and they sometimes win.
Had the same bug in SFIV, probably something in the code.

Fallout 4 on the PS4. Game glitched where the character was half submerged into the ground and the hands were stuck in the air. I had put 25-30 hours into the game and could not continue.

Well folks, it finally happened to me. Gaming is supposed to be an escape: I don't want to be stressed by an impassable obstacle that is due solely to the complete INCOMPETENCE of the developer. I have just experienced it for the first time while playing Picross S4. And I don't think it's even a glitch... I think the developers just made a puzzle that cannot be solved.

I know it cannot be solved because I can solve EVERY picross puzzle in existence. I simply cannot fail. So the only answer is that the developers somehow not only missed this one but haven't fixed it in the years it's been released. Anyway, here's the puzzle (pathetic):

Anyway, what experiences have you had with game breaking bugs that prevented you from proceeding?

Nah. Thought something about this post seemed weird as I don't remember this puzzle being much of a problem. Just fired up Picross S4 up while sitting on the toilet and completed P70 in 3:49…. Maybe, I don't know, get good or whatever before blaming the developer for YOUR INCOMPETENCE.

Fallout New Vegas had some for sure, but since I played it like 11 years ago I don't remember what precisely was the issue

In Vampire Bloodlines I needed to use the console and use cheat codes because in 2 places the game always crashed so I needed to use the console to transport me into the next location

In the PC port of Call of Cthulhu : Dark Corners of the Earth there was one sections right at the end where I couldn't survive a "running away from danger" section so I needed to use a trainer/cheat code to progress further

D2 (which I loved at that time) on Dreamcast never worked at a certain point for me. I think (it's been awhile...)it was at a point when you had to swap disc and once you swapped you got nothing but a black screen.
Apparently it was a very uncommon disc issue that I unfortunately found myself victim to.

I got stuck at the end of Prince Of Persia: Warrior Within, after basically 100%ing the game, way back when it was launched.

When you go back to the throne room to find Kaileena and go back to the present chasing her through the time portal, the Prince simply wouldn't be teleported. The game broke and no matter what I tried, I simply couldn't continue.

I had no other save (not that it would guarantee anything, the game was riddled with other breaking bugs) and ended up never finishing it. Didn't play Two Thrones either.

After all these years I've finally found someone on the internet that had the same experience. It was heartbreaking. The ending cutscene is literally after you jump through that portal. Warrior Within was excruciating because from what I remember it was a little confusing navigating the world. I sucked it up and did it again gambling that the bug wouldn't happen again just to watch that stupid cutscene. Youtube wasn't around back then. Also couldn't find anyone on GameFAQs forums that was running into the issue. Two Thrones wasn't as bad. It was more traditional like Sands of Time which I appreciated.
  • #92
Darksiders 2 kept crashing on my PS4. I wasn't able to get more than ~10 minutes into the game. Sometimes it would crash at the opening cutscene, sometimes a bit later. Sometimes I could load the autosave and make baby steps in between crashes, but I never got past the tutorial boss fight. I tried everything I could possibly think of—maybe my hard drive was incompatible? Either way I was able to return it (and eventually rebought it on Switch—still kinda nervous about trying again though!)

Maybe slightly less relevant to the thread, but back at the PS5's launch I discovered that there was no way to install episodes 2-4 from the Life is Strange 2 disc. I imagine this flaw is present with every game that has separate downloadable episodes from the disc like this one. Hopefully it's been fixed but I haven't tried it since! A few people had the issue online but no one who could fix it has ever acknowledged it… seems like a big oversight!

Firewatch of PS4 when it first came out.. there was only one save slot and it autosaved between zones as it loaded.

Trouble is, there is a spot between the two zones that you fall through the map and couldn't progress. It was the mindset of they didn't want players to "cheat" by having multiple save files. Took them a long while to fix it.

On another note, not sure if it qualifies as a glitch, but Grim Fandango would run too fast on PCs so you'd get stuck on the elevator.
